The Motorhome Problem
Why Motorhome AdBlue Problems Nearly Always Start With a Ducato
Walk down any row of UK motorhomes and you are looking at Fiat Ducatos. The vast majority of British-built and imported coachbuilts, from Swift and Bailey to Auto-Trail, Hymer and Burstner, sit on the Ducato chassis cab, and from 2019 onwards that means a 2.3 MultiJet engine with an AdBlue system bolted underneath the habitation you paid so much for.
Here is the awkward truth about that pairing: AdBlue systems were engineered for delivery vans that work every day, not for leisure vehicles that cover two or three thousand miles a year. A motorhome spends most of its life stationary, and the urea fluid sitting in its tank, pump and injector slowly turns into hard crystals while nothing moves. Cold winters in open storage make the chemistry worse, and by spring the dosing hardware is coated in deposits it was never designed to shrug off.
Level senders stick, pressure drops, and the ducato adblue warning appears at the worst possible moment, typically the week you are loading up for the first trip of the season. Left unattended, the countdown that follows can turn a planned tour into a motorhome that will not start at all.
Lay-Up to Breakdown
How a Winter in Storage Becomes a Ducato AdBlue Fault
The sequence is remarkably consistent among the motorhome owners who ring us. The van goes into its compound in October running perfectly. Over the lay-up the fluid crystallises around the pump and injector, and a sensor drifts out of range with nobody there to notice. Come Easter, the engine starts, the dash lights up, and an AdBlue warning light refuses to clear no matter how much fresh fluid goes in.
What makes it sting is the timing. Ferry crossings are booked, sites are paid for, and the vehicle that is supposed to carry the holiday is threatening to immobilise itself. A Fiat dealer visit means finding a workshop with the headroom for a seven metre coachbuilt, then waiting for parts, and plenty of owners lose the trip entirely.
- Low annual mileage means the system never runs hot or often enough to keep itself clear
- Months of standing let urea crystallise in the pump, lines and dosing injector
- Faults surface on the first start of the season, right when a trip is planned
- Tall, long coachbuilts are awkward for ordinary workshops, so repairs drag on
The Permanent Fix
We Come to the Motorhome, Wherever It Lives
There is no need to move a fully loaded coachbuilt anywhere. Our technician works on the Ducato exactly where it is parked.
Tell Us About the Van
Registration and postcode through the quote form, or a quick phone call. The base vehicle is what matters, so any converter’s badge on a 2.3 MultiJet Ducato is fine.
We Travel to It
Driveway, dealer forecourt, campsite or secure storage compound, anywhere across London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent. If access to your compound needs arranging, we coordinate that with you first.
Software, Not Spanners
After a diagnostic scan confirms the SCR fault, we apply a permanent AdBlue delete to the engine software. Nothing under the habitation floor is disturbed and no parts are fitted.
Tour Without the Worry
Warnings, countdowns and dosing faults are gone for good, backed by a lifetime software warranty. The system cannot interrupt another holiday, however long the van sits between trips.
The work starts from £250 and compares kindly with a dealership AdBlue repair, where replacement dosing hardware on a Ducato commonly runs to four figures and the new parts face the same idle winters as the old ones. We handle panel van Ducatos and campervan conversions on the same basis, and the rest of the Fiat diesel range is covered on our Fiat AdBlue page. Running something else alongside the motorhome? Diagnostic Reference
Fault Codes We Read on 2.3 MultiJet Ducatos
If a habitation check or a garage scan has already put a code to your ducato adblue fault, it is very likely one of these five.
Reductant pressure too low. Crystallised deposits from long standing are starving the dosing pump.
Reductant system performance. The SCR circuit as a whole is falling short of what the ECU expects.
Reductant level sensor performance. A sticking sender that misreads the tank after months parked up.
Reductant tank heater circuit. A common Ducato failure that stops the system waking after cold storage.
NOx sensor performance, bank one sensor two. An expensive sensor our software makes irrelevant.
One visit clears every one of these from your Ducato permanently, and none of them can return to spoil a tour.

Ducato Motorhome Owners Ask Us These
Yes, storage compounds and farm storage sites are a regular part of our week. As long as you can arrange access for our technician, or meet us at the gate, the whole job is done with the motorhome sitting on its pitch. A laid-up vehicle never needs to turn a wheel just to get fixed.
No. Once the software solution is in place the SCR system can no longer log faults, show warnings or start a countdown, so however many months the van stands, it will not greet you with an AdBlue message in spring. You also stop buying fluid, which suits a vehicle that only tours a few weeks a year.
Almost certainly. Swift, Bailey, Auto-Trail, Elddis, Hymer and most other converters build the majority of their coachbuilts on the Ducato chassis, so the engine, ECU and AdBlue system are pure Fiat regardless of the name above the cab. Send your registration and we will confirm the base vehicle and price before anything is booked.
Ring us straight away rather than gambling on the countdown holding out. We will do our best to fit the visit in around your departure, and because the fix is permanent you leave with the problem solved outright rather than patched. Travelling abroad with a suppressed fault beats breaking down abroad with an active one.
