P20E8 and P204F: When AdBlue Pressure and Dosing Go Wrong

11 August 2026 3 min read

P20E8 — “Reductant Pressure Too Low” — and its close cousin P204F — “Reductant System Performance” — are the plumbing codes of the AdBlue world. Where NOx sensor codes are about measurement, these two mean the system physically cannot deliver AdBlue the way the ECU demands. Citroen and Peugeot BlueHDi engines throw them often; so do Audis, Fiats and Transits.

The crystallisation chain

AdBlue is two-thirds water. Wherever it lingers — injector tip, pump chamber, feed line — it dries into hard white crystals. The system fights back by purging lines after shutdown, but purge cycles get interrupted, and over the years the deposits win. The pump then has to work harder against narrowed lines, pressure sags, and P20E8 lands. P204F is the broader complaint: dosing quantity or pressure isn’t matching command, which can be the pump, the injector, a kinked or leaking line, or the tank unit’s innards.

Why winter makes it worse

AdBlue freezes at around minus 11°C, so the tank carries a heater. When the heater fails — a very common quiet failure — the first cold snap leaves the pump trying to draw slush. On many vehicles the heater is sealed inside the tank assembly, which is how a small heater failure becomes a four-figure dealer quote.

What a proper diagnosis looks like

These codes deserve live data, not guesswork: commanded versus actual pressure, dosing tests, injector spray checks. A blocked injector with a healthy pump is a very different bill from a failing pump — and a leak throws the same codes as either. We do this at your location with manufacturer-level tools before recommending anything, because replacing parts along the chain one by one is how these vehicles end up costing more than the fix twice over.

Repair or retire the system?

A light injector clean or a damaged line is a sensible repair, and we’ll say so. But heavy crystallisation is systemic: whatever you replace goes back into the same environment that furred up its predecessor. Where the tank assembly is quoted, or this is the second dosing fault, the permanent answer is our AdBlue delete — the ECU stops commanding the dosing system entirely, so pressure codes have nothing left to complain about.
